Beijing Subway

System

Subway construction started China's capital in 1965. The first stretch opened between the city's railway station and Pingguoyuan included today's western branch of Line 1 and the southern part of ring line 2. In the 1980's the ring line was finished and both lines started operating separately. In the 1990's an eastern extension of Line 1 was built, the so-called Fu Ba Line, to Sihuidong (formerly shown as Ba Wang Fan) opened for trial in Oct. 1999 for the People's Republic's 50th anniversary. The new section (13.5 km) was eventually connected to the western section of Line 1 on 24 June 2000 which had been upgraded to ATO operation by Westinghouse Signals. Now there are talks about a further extension to the east.

The entire Line 1 from Pingguoyuan to Sihuidong is now 38 km long and provides transfer to ring line 2 twice, at Fuxingmen and at Jianguomen. Ring Line 2 is 16 km, so the total network operating in 2000 is 54 km. Most stations have central platforms, are 118m long, but there are only 10 have escalators. 4 or 6-car-trains are used, which are equipped with acoustic station announcement. For future extensions of the network (8 lines) some stations have already been built as transfer stations: Xizhimen, Dongsishitiao, Jianguomen, Yonghegong and Jishuitan.

Projects

According to Chinese newspapers published in late 1999, Beijing will soon be constructing three so-called rapid transit lines, which, include both subways and suburban trains.

1) "City Rail"- Line 13 in the overall "rapid transit" planning. Construction started in December 1999. The semi-circular line with 16 stations runs from Xizhimen to Dongzhimen (both are stations on the current Circle Line 2). Let's imagine it as a half-circle built on top of the Circle Line. The first phase of the 43 km line (Xizhjmen to Huilongguan East) will be ready in 2001. And phase two in 2005. 2.8 km will be underground, 7.7 km elevated and the rest at grade.

2) Further extension of Line 1 from Sihuidong to Di Shi Qiao, 17.2 km in length

3) Subway line 5--the first north-south line in Beijing (see map above) is 27.7km (14.88 underground - 24 m deep, 12.82 ground level or on viaduct), with 15 underground stations, 8 stations on viaduct, and 1 on ground level). Construction for phase 1 (Songjiazhuang to Datuan) started in autumn 2000 for completion in 2003; phase 2 (Datuan to Taipingzhuang North) is due to be completed in 2006.
